Boko Haram-IS pledge is 'act of desperation': Govt

Image
Abuja - Boko Haram's pledge of allegiance to the Islamic State group was a sign of weakness and a result of pressure on the jihadist militants by Nigeria and its allies, the government in said on Tuesday. National security spokesman Mike Omeri called the pledge "an act of desperation and comes at a time when Boko Haram is suffering heavy losses". The Islamists' leader Abubakar Shekau made the announcement in an audio message on Saturday night after months of indications that Boko Haram was seeking a formal tie-up. Troops from Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger have claimed a series of successes against the militants since last month, pushing them out of captured territory in northeast Nigeria. The operation is designed to secure and stabilise the region in time for the general elections on March 28. Omeri said in a statement that the four-nation coalition force was "rooting out Boko Haram out of its strongholds and degrading its combat abilities". Also

Chibok snubs FG’s offer to rebuild girls’ school By: Augustine Osayande.

Abuja - Indigenes of Chibok community in Borno State have rejected the gesture of the Federal Government to reconstruct the Government Secondary School in Chibok where over 200 schoolgirls were abducted last year. The indigenes who were led by the Caretaker Chairman of Chibok Council Area, Mallam Ba'ana Lawan, accused government of several “broken promises” regarding the rescue of the girls since their abduction in April. “It is disheartening to inform you that since the abduction of these girls, the federal government did not bother to send delegations to Chibok to sympathize with the parents, instead, the parents were invited to Abuja and conveyed in cargo military plane with no comfort whatsoever. We still observed that recently, President Goodluck Jonathan visited Mubi and Baga, but failed to visit Chibok to sympathize with our people,” Lawan said. He added that the priority should be to get the schoolgirls returned rather than the rebuilding of the destroyed school. Lawan

Boko Haram bid to join ISIS a propaganda boost.

a propaganda boost for now, but in the long term it could internationalise a conflict restricted to Nigeria for nearly six years, analysts say.  The effort comes as both Islamic extremist groups have lost ground in recent weeks and as Nigeria's neighbours are forming a multinational army to confront Boko Haram.  By pledging allegiance to ISIS, Nigeria's home-grown militants have severed ties to al-Qaeda, which is more powerful in the region, said Charlie Winter, a researcher at the London-based Quilliam Foundation. Boko Haram has never been an affiliate of al-Qaeda, but its militants fought alongside al-Qaeda-linked groups during northern Mali's Islamic uprising two years ago, and some of its fighters have been trained in Somalia by al-Shabab, another group with ties to al-Qaeda, according to the group's propaganda. Boko Haram's leader, Abubakar Shekau, reportedly pledged allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in an audio posted Saturday on Twitter. I

Last Saturday’s demonstration of the use of the card reader in selected states of the country has left the political class perplexed. Those against the use of the card reader cannot openly come out to denounce the device given its effective blockage of fake Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs. At the same time, those in rabid support of the use of the device are also constrained by the shortcomings as seen in its failure to effectively read the thumbprints of a significant number of potential voters in many places it was used. •Card reader •Card reader In some centres as Bauchi, potential voters were had to clean their hands repeatedly as it emerged that the card reader is constrained by ointments, grease or other sorts of lotion. However, INEC officials say that all hope is not lost. Voters whose thumbprints are not read by the card readers could still vote but would have to fill an incident report form to reflect the development.
